Cincinnati Zoo Academy – The Coolest Learning Laboratory EVER!
Hughes High School is proud to offer the Cincinnati Zoo Academy — giving students hands-on experience working directly with animals at the world-class Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden. This college-preparatory program is especially designed for juniors and seniors who are interested in professional careers in animal care, veterinary medicine, conservation, horticulture and other animal-related fields. Students work directly with zookeepers on a variety of tasks – from hand feeding elephants to caring for snakes and giving penguins their daily vitamins.
Rising juniors and seniors are invited to apply for the 2015-16 school year.
Founded in 1975, the Zoo Academy is the first and only program in the nation to offer high school students daily, intensive and hands-on experience in an actual zoo. Students spend part of each day in academic classes and the remainder of the day working with zookeepers and animals. Work sites include the manatee Springs, Bird House, Primate House, Elephant House, Nocturnal House and other world-class zoo exhibits.
In addition to hands-on experience at the zoo, students are engaged in a rigorous academic program. Courses include anatomy, physiology, English, pre-calculus, natural resources, botany, physics, zoology and art. Students also have opportunities to earn vocational degrees and summer internships.
