A Seamless Pathway to Success
The Hughes STEM High School offers a BOLD new approach to education in Cincinnati Public Schools featuring a creative focus in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) with a strong liberal arts foundation. STEM also encompasses the following;
- Project-based learning,
- Critical thinking,
- Application of technology across all disciplines,
- Breaking down barriers between the school, higher education, business and community organizations,
- The development of 21st century interpersonal and organizational skills,
- Exposure to the college environment and earning college credits while in high school,
- Incorporating Social and Emotional Learning,
- Web 2.0 technology, Blackboard, 1-to-1 laptops
Hughes students engage in rich interdisciplinary content during their high school career; however, at the end of their 10th grade years students have the opportunity to apply for a STEM Major. During a “Gateway” experience, students present evidence of their unique 21st century skills, content knowledge, and reasons why they should be admitted into one of the four majors. The STEM majors are:
- Health Sciences –This major focuses on both the medical/therapeutic science and research science. The goal of the Health Science Pathway is to engage, excite and educate students about the promise and achievements of scientific research and the opportunities available in the medical/therapeutic sciences.
- Engineering Futures – This major focuses on the study of engineering design processes in civil, mechanical, biomedical, nanotechnology, sustainability, as well as others. The goal of this major is to engage, excite and educate students about the role of engineering in the urban and non-urban environments and understand how engineering provides solutions to many problems.
- Digital Education – This major focuses on the study of academic and industry education. The goal of this major is to engage , excite and educate students about the STEM education fields.
- Zoo Academy – This major focuses on the study of animal care, conservation, and environmental studies. The goal of this major is to engage, excite and educate students about the plant and animal sciences.
Hughes is one of five STEM platform schools in the Ohio STEM Learning Network (http://www.osln.org). As a collaborative partner with OSLN, Hughes is directly connected to a statewide initiative uniting STEM education assets and engages in a forum to share best practices. Other Hughes partners include Strive, The University of Cincinnati, Duke Energy, Procter & Gamble, Cincinnati State Technical and Community College, General Electric, Cincinnati Federation of Teachers, Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden, Macy’s, the National Underground Freedom Center, Cincinnati Museum Center, Great Oaks, American Chemical Society, Hamilton County Educational Services Center, Cincinnati Youth Collaborative, as well as many others. |
