About Health Careers

Healthcare is an essential part of life. Patients need proper care from compassionate people, and healthcare providers need to find the right people to fill those positions. As people get older, their health care needs often increase. This creates a higher demand for all kinds of health-related services. That’s why healthcare is a field with so many career opportunities.

Projections from the U.S. Bureau of Labor of Statistics (BLS) show that healthcare jobs are expected to increase by 18 percent through 2026. This means that the industry will add about 2.4 million new healthcare jobs.

It’s an exciting time to pursue a career in healthcare. This field will add more employees than any other occupation in the coming years, according to the BLS.

Career growth isn’t the only reason many people work in the healthcare field. It’s also a field that lets you help many people. Healthcare professionals get to make a difference every single time they go to work. It can be a rewarding career path with a sense of personal fulfillment.

About This Program

This is a two-year program available to students attending Hughes STEM High School, beginning in the junior year. 

Students will explore a wide range of health careers at Good Samaritan Hospital, rotating every quarter to a new department to work side-by-side with healthcare professions. Some of the department rotations include Guest Services, Administration, Physical Therapy, Nutrition, and Prenatal Care. During the senior year, students will complete two rotations to offer more time for learning and hands-on experience in specific departments.

GPA Required to Enter the Program
Students must have a 2.0 GPA and a recommendation from a teacher, school counselor or principal, a 93 percent attendance rate, and on-track for graduation.

Classroom Instruction
Students work approximately 14 hours per week (3-5 hours/4 days per week). Students complete their core academic requirements in the afternoons back at the school site and remain at school one full day per week.

Work-Based Learning
Students will work at the hospital four days a week and earn $9 an hour. Three of the four days, students will be scheduled for four-hour shifts with another day designated for a six-hour shift.

Transportation to the Work Site
Students are provided unrestricted Metro passes to assist in transportation to the work site. A shuttle is then provided for students transporting them back to the school site at the conclusion of their work shift so that they can return to participate in their core academic classes.

Industry Credential
There is no industry credential offered at this time that would count toward graduation points.

Job Prospects After Graduation
Healthcare occupations are projected to add more jobs than any of the other occupational group. This projected growth is mainly due to an aging population, leading to greater demand for healthcare services.

Expected Salary
With so many career opportunities in healthcare, salaries vary from one position to another. A pharmacy technician can earn $35,000 annually, while physical therapists can earn $100,000 with experience. The salary for hospital administrators can top over $200,000. Like many jobs, the salary in this career field depends on experience, education and location.
