Hughes "Walk-In" In Memory of Parkland Staff and Students!

March 13, 2018

Parents, Students and Staff:

As you may have heard there is a nationwide call for a student-based walk-out to support the victims of the Parkland, FL shooting. The protest is meant to shine a spotlight on school shootings and prompt reform laws that will make schools safer.  In an effort to support any student who would like to participate, I will allow any student who wishes to show solidarity with the movement an opportunity at 10 a.m. on March 14th to "walk-in" to the auditorium and remain silent for 17 minutes. Students who participate will be monitored by administration/security and will be sent back to class at 10:17.

We are not advocating a whole-school activity, but we are allowing those who wish to participate a safe space in which to do so. We are not allowing students to walk-out of school. Our ILT, PTSA and LSDMC are aware of this arrangement.

The attached letter was sent home from the Superintendent's office explaining the "walk-in."

If you have any questions or concerns please email or come see me.

Thanks,

Kathy Wright
Principal
